Croatia is a land of contrasts with an impressive heritage. The north of the country shares many cultural similarities with Central Europe, whilst its coastline feels closer to the Mediterranean. It is a popular destination for holidaymakers looking for a holiday with a bit of variety. The Croatian Riviera boasts around 5,800 kilometres of beaches and coastline, including those of its 1,185 islands, which are surrounded by the blue waters of the Adriatic and offer a wide range of fun seaside activities. Explore Zagreb, the capital and cultural centre of the country, Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", or Split, the commercial and cultural hub of central Dalmatia. Each of these cities has landscapes as fascinating as their history, and are just waiting to be discovered!
Dubrovnik, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Adriatic" in southern Croatia, takes you on a journey back in time. With its narrow medieval streets weaving around Baroque churches and Renaissance palaces, the city has an almost Italian feel to it. The magnificent pebbled beaches, lapped by crystal-clear waters, give their summertime visitors a taste of seaside paradise. At the same time, the green mountainous coastline invites you to ventune inland or set sail for the countless charming Dalmatian islands.
Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has earned its nickname the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. The pedestrian-only old town is an open-air museum in itself, full of churches, palaces and galleries, while the main avenue, the Stradun, is lined with cafés, terraces, restaurants and shops, making it a lovely place for a stroll. Head to the top of the ramparts for an impressive panoramic view. Distance from the airport: 22 km.
The small town of Mlini is located in a charming environment between Cavtat and Dubrovnik. A few restaurants and cafés line the edge of its attractive fishing port. Once renowned for its mineral water sources, its rich history is still evident among the historic monuments and wonderful gardens. Regular bus and water-taxi connexions operated several times a day between Mlini and Dubrovnik (about 12 kilometres, for a fee). Dubrovnik airport is approximately 15 km away.
Nestled in the heart of a picturesque bay around 40 kilometres north of Dubrovnik, Slano is an ideal place for a relaxing seaside holiday. Its long, clear stony beaches are lapped by crystal-clear waters and backed by rolling hills, making it the perfect place for relaxing moments in the sun. There are also a number of historic sites here that are worth a visit. Distance from airport: 52 km.
This beautiful little fishing town lies around 20 kilometres from the old town of Dubrovnik and charms its visitors with its small port, palm-lined promenade and many cafés and restaurants. The old town invites you to get lost in its narrow streets, whilst the stony beaches and bathing pontoons are the perfect places to relax under the Croatian sunshine. Distance from the airport: 6 km.
Koločep is one of the 14 islands that make up the Elaphites archipelago to the north-west of Dubrovnik. This entirely pedestrianised island boasts a history that dates through the Renaissance and the Romanesque period right back to the Middle Ages, as well as natural beauty of the highest order.
