Spain's regional diversity and many islands give it a multifaceted appeal that has attracted visitors to the country for decades. Its cultural treasures, diverse landscapes, magnificent beaches and mild climate place it at the top of the list of the most popular destinations in Europe. The southern cities’ Moorish heritage, Andalusia’s distinct character, the Balearic Islands’ lively atmosphere and natural landscapes and the Canary Islands’ unique volcanic scenery all transport you to different worlds where unforgettable experiences are guaranteed.
With 100 kilometres of coastline and omnipresent sunshine nearly 300 days a year, the Costa de Valencia has so much to offer. The hilly hinterland is dotted with orange groves, authentic villages where traditions are kept alive, and relics of the region's rich history. Valencia itself is overflowing with culture, with an exceptional heritage that includes the Silk Lodge, the Serranos Towers and the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados. Valencia was also the birthplace of the famous Spanish dish paella in the 19th century and the Fallas celebrations, a custom initiated by a group of carpenters to celebrate the arrival of spring. Today, this festival celebrates art, culture and traditions for several days throughout the city. And still, Valencia remains resolutely oriented towards the future, as demonstrated by the ultra-modern buildings of the City of Arts and Sciences.
This is one of the most popular towns on the Costa de Valencia. Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Calderona mountains, it boasts a 5 kilometre-long coastline with magnificent golden sandy beaches, and historical attractions that bear witness to a rich past. Gandía is also renowned for its culinary specialities, including arròz negro, a paella made with squid ink. Distance from the airport: 76 km.
There's never a shortage of fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables in the city which gave birth to the famous paella. The best place to find high-quality produce here is undoubtedly the Mercado Central. This covered market’s impressive ceiling makes it an attraction in itself. The iconic Silk Lodge and the famous El Micalet cathedral, with its octagonal bell tower, are also not to be missed. The thousand-year-old district of El Carmen has a very special atmosphere, and is now a popular spot for artists and night owls. The old River Turia, around which the heart of Valencia gradually grew, has now been replaced by a ribbon of greenery that crosses the city from one side to the other. No fewer than 160 kilometres of cycle paths have been laid out, some of which lead to the city's new landmark – the City of Arts and Sciences, a masterpiece of modern architecture that celebrates art, science and culture.
