Vacation in Boa Vista

Endless sunshine, pristine landscapes and the good life

The Cape Verde archipelago, off the coast of Senegal, is the home of the famous singer Cesaria Evora and is comprised of around fifteen islands. Each one contains wild and contrasting landscapes made up of immense expanses of dunes, volcanic reliefs and lush valleys. Its pristine beaches are particularly popular for kitesurfing, windsurfing and diving. Due to its history as a former overseas department of Portugal, it is steeped in Portuguese traditions, but it is also influenced by its location at the crossroads of three continents. You will captivated by the colours, warm atmosphere and gentle way of life in Cape Verde.

Boa Vista

Idyllic beaches and dunes as far as the eye can see

Boa Vista is larger and more traditional than Sal, and is known for its immense dunes and desert landscapes surrounded by a turquoise sea. This 31 kilometre long and 29 kilometre wide island, known as the Sahara of the Atlantic, has no less than 55 kilometres of endless – often deserted – golden beaches. Inland, the landscape is punctuated by rocky stretches and sandy plains with lush oases to explore.

  • The first stop on the tour will be the Rabil pottery school, where younger generations keep this local tradition alive. It’s one of the few workshops where you can still see examples of authentic Boa Vistan craftsmanship. From collecting the raw materials to modelling and firing, everything here is done by hand.

The next stop takes you to the north coast to admire the wreck of the Cabo Santa Maria, a Spanish cargo ship that ran aground in 1968 and provided for the island's inhabitants in difficult times. You will then head for Bofareira, a small village with less than 200 inhabitants, where you can see the islanders' way of life and shop for local produce and souvenirs.

You will also visit the Viana desert, which can be compared to a miniature extension of the Sahara desert in the middle of the Atlantic. Its beautiful landscapes are constantly changing as it expands and widens, meaning its properties are shifting all the time. Here, you can sample local produce, try your hand at sand boarding and enjoy a stunning sunset in the late afternoon.

Recommendations: Comfortable shoes, a bottle of water, sun protection and cash for your purchases.

At the Museu Dos Naufragos, the only private museum in the country, you can learn all about the history of the ships that have been stranded around the island for centuries, which were a means of survival for the locals in times of drought, and also learn about Cape Verdean culture in general.
